Every castle and abbey is unique, but there are certain types. These two, Alnwich and Banbury, Are still occupied by the same families for hundreds of years, and they open parts to the public, for a fee. They also have weddings and special functions. They are furnished extravagantly inside, but most don't allow inside photography. We toured through Alnwick, but got to Banbury (on the ocean) too late in the evening, so we just walked around it.
Other castles and abbeys are pretty much abandoned, and are cared for by a government sponsored foundation. These are Jedburgh Abbey and Melrose Abbey, where Paul traces his Stephenson line nine generations back.
Still other, generally oder castles are abandoned and ruined, usually by some group tired of retaking it, so they blew it up with gunpowder.
